My name is Taylor Brumant and I am from Newark, New Jersey. I would like to double major in Biology and Evolutionary Anthropology and minor in sociology because I am very interested in learning about the origins of humans: behaviorisms, genes, and the psychology of human beings and animals. I believe, however, it is important to understand the different stigmas and problems that reoccur throughout the medical field which is why I am majoring in sociology. My main interest in medicine stems from this curiosity in the theory of epigenetic and how environmental changes could influence and change the alleles of your gene and with my involvement in debate however, I was exposed to how the medical field was notorious for abusing many marginalized communities and specifically the black community with its history in treating black bodies as experiments. The excitement I had about the subject through my Biology course made me want to pursue a career in medicine but then exposure I had through debate on medical malpractice and its tainted history with people of color also revealed the pitfalls of medicine. Therefore, I hope to evoke change in the medical community and propagate an environment where not only an understanding of humans and how our natural tendencies have evolved to what they are now but there is an acknowledgement of creating an inclusive space for all.

“"A Cardea Fellow means to me being a part of a community where you are united with a group of others by your belief in impacting the health field. It means defying the stigmas that may come with undergoing a pre-health, pre-med profession and instilling an equitable and inspiring community of upcoming medical professionals."”
