Whether it be on the soccer field planning a play to win the game, having a picnic in the Duke Gardens, baking cookies with friends or being in Chemistry lab seeing my textbook come to life, being a Cardea Fellow here at Duke has allowed me to not only explore my academic interests, but build a supportive community. Taking classes such as EGR 101 building a 3D printed Peritonsillar Abscess model for Duke Medical Students, Chinese Medicine exploring the rich history of alternative medicine , and SOCIOL 264-Death and Dying igniting conversations about various perspectives on death and dying within America, have all allow me to view the field of healthcare and medicine through various perspectives.

Being a first-generation student of Peruvian immigrants, I strive to become a Pediatrician to serve patients in medically underserved communities. Helping those in the most need is the way I plan to give back to the years of support I received back home. Seeing the socioeconomic disparities within the medical system motivates me to create change and make such a basic need accessible to everyone. Being able to share my roots through cultural groups such as Mi Gente, sharing my faith through the DCC, and receiving mentorship from upperclassmen through the Cardea Fellows have all enriched my Duke experience so far and I am excited for the years to come.

“Having a network of students all motivated to pursue a career within healthcare creates a special bond among us, making Cardea Fellows more than a program it's a family. ”
