My name is Nia Capers and I am currently a freshman at Duke University intending on majoring in Global Health and Psychology. Growing up and attending a performing arts school from kindergarten to twelfth grade has shaped me into the creative and motivated person I am today. Though I do not plan to pursue a career in anything arts-related in the future, I plan to integrate this sense of creativity into every goal I plan for the future. Incorporating my interests of how our minds work and healthcare disparities across the globe led me to my choice in my intended majors as I became fascinated with how mental disorders are viewed and treated outside the United States. Mental illnesses are stigmatized almost everywhere. These negative views are a big part in why many people do not seek treatment. This is especially true in marginalized communities and I have seen firsthand the consequences that a lack of access to treatments for mental disorders can have on families. There are still so many unanswered questions within the field of psychopathology and I am eager to seek solutions.

“Cardea has allowed me to be a part of a community with individuals that support and encourage each other as we start our journey into the pre-health world. I am constantly surrounded by young people who are like me and make me excited to achieve my goals.”
