Hi, my name is Katherine Maddock, and I'm from Winston Salem, NC. I am planning to study Neuroscience. I hope to become a Physician Assistant in Palliative Care. I am the second eldest of four girls in my family. My relationship with my sisters strongly influenced my personality, leading me to be a natural caregiver. Furthermore, as an active member and officer in numerous high school clubs, including Executive Student Council, Junior Civitans, and National Honor Society, I have always been motivated to engage and connect with people, positively impacting my community through my personal involvement and action. I am also an athlete, serving as Captain of both my varsity high school volleyball and swim teams, and participating in club volleyball for six years. Combined, these characteristics demonstrate my passion for helping others, physical health, and mental well being. My belief that a career in healthcare would promote the intersection of these interests was reinforced by the opportunity to shadow Carl Grey, MD and Tiffany Statler, PA at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. This experience, along with being by my grandmother's side through the end stages of her battle with cancer, introduced me to the field of palliative care and my future career goals.
“I am extremely honored to be selected as a Cardea Fellow. I have already experienced the benefits of its mentors and community. I look forward to the opportunity to learn with my peers, encouraging one another to grow not only as scholars, but as people.”
