Neuroscience

I am Hanna, a sophomore at Duke University. My passion for medicine began at a young age, and I am fascinated by the development, structure, and function of the human brain. I grew up in Ethiopia, where various neurological disorders are considered a curse or related to religion or belief. Children born with autism are kept in their homes because parents are afraid to be judged or receive hate from their community. Societies often had negative views of people with epilepsy and relied largely on spiritual and supernatural beliefs to treat epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Thus, I became more interested in studying neuroscience to learn and contribute towards assisting individuals who suffer from various neurological disorders.

I am majoring in neuroscience at Duke and am involved in various student organizations, including Duke NeuroCare and the Duke Rotaract Club. Recently, I was a research intern in the Life Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Program at the University of Minnesota Medical School. In the future, I aspire to attend medical school and pursue a career in the medical field.
