Hello! My name is Eva Reyes and I am from Spring Lake, North Carolina. I am freshman here at Duke University who comes from a long line of Duke basketball fanatics! Some of my favorite hobbies include exercising, spending time with loved ones, reading, and being outdoors. My passion for healthcare stems from wanting to promote a healthier America, one where everyone is able to acquire the healthcare they need.

I have witnessed period poverty, defined as lack of access to menstrual products, first hand at my rural, Title I high school, meaning that my county serves a high percent of socio-economically disadvantaged students. As an independent service project, I created and implemented the “Pink Box Project” in 2022 where I collected menstrual products via donation and distributed them to every classroom and office within my high school. This was important to me as a woman, but also because I was taking the first step to end period poverty in my county. Along with this, I was able to assist with a health fair in my county where elementary aged children were able to come and get basic check-up’s, something many of them had never had access to. Being certified in Vision Screening, I was able to perform and interpret vision tests. Both of these experiences were eye opening, and motivate me to make even more of a difference within my community once I become a Physician Assistant.

While beginning my journey at Duke, you will see me continuing to give back to my new community and make change for the underserved such as minorities, the elderly, and the socioeconomically disadvantaged. I am excited to immerse myself within my culture as a part of Mi Gente and the Duke multicultural organization. A martial artist for the past 12 years, I look forward to potentially joining Club Taekwondo or Jujitsu. I see education at a privilege, and I don’t plan on taking any opportunity I receive here for granted.

“Being a Cardea Fellow has rapidly become one of my favorite things about being a Freshman at Duke. The support I receive from my other fellows and directors reminds me of why I am here and pushes me to keep going. Cardea inspires me to go above and beyond, empowering me to make a difference here at Duke and wherever I may go. ”
