Academic Interests: Major in Psychology, minor in Chemistry
Hi! I am a junior studying psychology and chemistry currently on the pre-medicine track. I am interested in the intersection of medicine, art, and mental health, and hope to pursue a career in psychiatry or neurology after attending medical school. As a first-generation college student, I entered Duke with a passion for psychology and chemistry, but did not decide until my sophomore year to pursue medicine. I spent the summer after freshman year researching two mental hospitals in North Carolina, producing a digital exhibit surrounding the history of each. Through this experience, I became fascinated in the evolution of diagnosis and treatment. I decided to take more STEM classes that fall, and discovered my interest in the human mind coincided with an interest in the human body. At Duke, I have participated in a variety of research opportunities. Through the Bass Connections “Peer Coaches” team, I helped to create an app-based peer mental health support system for students on campus. I also work at the Nasher Museum of Art in the Department of Academic Initiatives, completing a variety of projects centering on the laws and ethics of artwork acquisition, museum internships for underrepresented groups, and use of 3D modeling techniques by institutions. This past summer, I worked with the Duke School of Medicine to create a web-based archive highlighting the annual Medical Student-Faculty Showcase. Since my freshman year, I have also been a part of SuWA (Supporting Women’s Actions), a program through Kenan Institute for Ethics that serves resettled refugees in the Durham area. I have formed strong bonds with the women in my classroom, and I consider them my family away from home. My continued experiences with these women only further solidify my excitement for a career in medicine, as they have opened my eyes to the particular struggles they face, many related to healthcare access and transparency. In my free time, I love to embroider, rock climb, and discover new books and music. The sixth of eight children, I also love spending time with my family and will never turn down a chance to read to my nieces and nephews!
“After joining the pre-medicine track during my sophomore year, I was looking for a community and support system of students with similar goals and passions, one that values connection over competition. I have found that (and much more) in Cardea. ”
