I am a passionate and tenacious student with a profound ardor for neuroscience and oncology. I am eager to explore the complexities of the human brain and genome, as well as their influence on health and behavior. My journey into the fields of neuroscience and oncology has been enriched by diverse experiences that have honed my research skills and reinforced my commitment to healthcare.
As a student researcher in the Madireddy Lab during the Rutgers University Youth Enjoy Science Internship, I am investigating the role of DNA polymerase eta in DNA replication at common fragile sites. This opportunity has been pivotal in cultivating my research skills and deepening my passion for scientific discovery. Additionally, my participation in the BOLD (BioCONECT Oncology Leadership Development) Initiative has enhanced my collaboration capabilities and commitment to cancer research. My internship in pathology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, alongside career shadowing experiences at the RCU and pharmacy departments, has provided me with a broad perspective on medical practice and the intricate workings of healthcare systems.
Involvement in community service and advocacy is central to my pursuits. Serving on Congressman Frank Pallone Jr’s Youth Advisory Council in the Healthcare Committee allowed me to engage in policy discussions and advocate for healthcare improvements in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Specifically, I focused on tackling anti-LGBTQ+ restrictions on blood donors during the national blood shortage. As a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentorship Program, I have been a figure to look up to for other Latinx students in my childhood elementary school. Moreover, my volunteer work spans various initiatives, including the Robert Wood Johnson University Health Promotions, New Brunswick Heart Festival, and COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics, where I have actively supported public health efforts. My advocacy work with the Active Minds Mental Health Advocacy Academy has also been instrumental in promoting women’s reproductive health rights and privacy.
Receiving the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship to Duke is a testament to my dedication and academic excellence. At Duke, I am excited to continue my exploration of neuroscience, engage in impactful research, and work toward becoming a physician-scientist within neurosurgery. I aspire to integrate clinical practice with research to develop innovative treatments and improve patient outcomes. Nevertheless, I am excited to explore other interests with the diverse community at Duke, such as Latinx culture, fitness and weightlifting, gaming, cooking (as a beginner), and more!
“As I join the Cardea Fellows this year, I aim to immerse myself in the diverse, passionate community that comes with Cardea. Taking advantage of such an opportunity to be involved with other like-minded individuals interested in the healthcare field is essential to my professional and personal development.”
