Hi, my name is Bailey! I am from a low-income, rural town of North Carolina. When I first came to Duke I noticed how the wealth disparity set me and my peers apart. I believe this disparity, the fact that some individuals inevitably have less money than others, plays a role in mental health. So I began my pursuit in psychology and sociology, and because I wanted my study of the entire human to be complete, I added in biology, to find out how I can help lower-income individuals overcome their battles with mental health. My future goals consist of conducting research to help large groups of people in poverty by learning what methods work to help overcome depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems. I also want to be able to educate my peers on the wealth disparity, and the large impact that it has on health. Research and education are so important for the betterment of society and for equality, so more people can live a better life with less mental health stigmas, lack of resources and understanding.
