Hello! My name is Acelo and I am a rising junior hoping to pursue medicine. I first became passionate about this path when I visited my family in Ethiopia and witnessed the health disparities in the system and a lack of consistent care and resources. As I spent more time volunteering in my local community, I also became invested in the inequities that exist in the U.S. healthcare system, specifically in the BIPOC community. As a first-generation, I want to help build a better global and public health system for everyone. At Duke, I am involved in the Duke Medical Ethics Journal, Bass Connections, BioSTEMs, working in the Endow lab and tutoring students in the Durham community. In my free time I enjoy reading, running, and trying different workout classes with friends!

“I love the academic and social community that Cardea Fellows creates. The fact that we can help each other through chemistry classes is very beneficial. I have made great friends through the program that have helped make my transition to Duke easier. In addition to this, the guidance and opportunities that Cardea offers are very helpful.  ”
