This past summer of 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to my home country of Accra, Ghana for two months through the fully funded Duke Engage Program, “Mitigating Health Risks and Environmental Damage through Education.” Our project focused on addressing the serious dangers posed by toxic substances, particularly heavy metals found in used motor oil. Although Ghanaian auto mechanics are highly skilled, many are unknowingly exposed to these harmful metals due to poor handling and disposal practices. These heavy metals can enter the body through skin contact, ingestion, or inhalation, leading to severe health issues such as cancer, kidney and liver damage, brain injuries, reproductive problems, and significant environmental harm. Unfortunately, many mechanics are unaware of these risks and often work without personal protective equipment (PPE). During our project, we visited local auto mechanic shops, engaging directly with the mechanics to raise awareness about health hazards and discuss preventative measures. We also distributed over 500 pairs of free gloves, funded by us students, to help prevent skin absorption of heavy metals for those working directly with used motor oil for extended periods of time.
Engaging in one-on-one conversations with many individuals allowed me to admire the skill, strength, and resilience of these mechanics in their diverse roles—such as electricians, welders, and sprayers. These interactions also provided a chance to hear many personal stories, sharing successes and aspirations but also hardships and losses. This experience deepened my understanding of the barriers to accessing medical care in Ghana and the preventable health conditions that are often overlooked due to flaws within the government and healthcare system. Not only did this experience solidify my passion for pursuing a career in medicine, but it also illuminated the specific health challenges that need to be addressed in Ghana. I left feeling inspired and determined to return one day, focused on improving healthcare access and the well-being of the Ghanaian community—an aspiration that has always been a lifelong goal of mine. I am committed to advocating for better health resources and education to ensure that Ghanaians across the country receive the care they deserve. All in all, this experience was an incredibly meaningful opportunity to impact the health of many individuals, deepen my aspirations, and celebrate my culture.
