I am studying to be a veterinarian at a zoo, aquarium or conservation center, but have always loved reading and writing. I am double-majoring in English and biology with the hope of writing for a scientific publication along with practicing veterinary medicine. At Duke, I combine writing and science by working in the veterinary department at Duke Lemur Center and working as a blogger for Duke Research Blog, where I attend talks by professors or scientists and do short write-ups about their research. I have also been both a columnist and editor for the Opinion section of the Duke Chronicle. I am writing my senior thesis on invertebrate color vision in the Johnsen Lab, and am very interested in sensory biology research because learning about what animals can see, hear, smell and sense via other mechanisms can teach us a lot about how to provide the best care for them.
“Being a Cardea Fellow has given me strong friendships and go-to study buddies for late nights in Perkins. The other fellows constantly inspire me to work harder and never give up on my dream career, no matter how tough the courses get. Looking back on my time at Duke as I enter my senior year, I know that I would not have done as well in my pre-health courses without the support of the other Fellows, and that I have made friends for life. ”
