I am currently a senior majoring in Psychology and minoring in Chemistry on the pre-med track. I'm pursuing this coursework because I enjoy learning about mental health and how that affects how physicians interact with their patients. On-campus, I'm a SAGE peer facilitator, I work in a social psychology research lab that focuses on diversity and differing identities, I am the Vice President of DukeHAND, and am the President of the Minority Association of Pre-medical students. These activities keep me pretty busy through much of the week, but in my free time, I also love to watch new movies, listen to political and pop culture podcasts, or hang out with friends. The summer after my freshman year I attended the Duke Summer Biomedical Sciences Institute, which was a six-week program where I was able to shadow physicians, do standardized patient modules, and take pre-health coursework. The SBSI program made my desire to become a physician in the future even stronger because I was interacting with a variety of people who were on different points on their journey to become a doctor on a daily basis who made me understand what becoming a doctor truly takes. The summer after my sophomore year I wanted to gain more research experience, so I participated in the Johns Hopkins Summer Internship Program which focuses on giving students of diverse backgrounds access to biomedical and public health research. I worked in a public health research lab where I worked on a project that focused on household air pollution in rural areas and how cleaner stove interventions can reduce cardiovascular and pulmonary problems. In the future, I would like to be either a psychiatrist or a dermatologist because of my passions in mental health and skincare.
