Hello, my name is Sion Chang, and I’m from Thomasville, NC! I’m currently studying biology, with a potential concentration in neurobiology or cellular biology, and I aspire to become either a pediatrician or an OB-GYN. Growing up, I have been interested in careers such as a teacher, doctor, etc. where I could directly communicate and provide assistance to others. My interest in healthcare was cultivated through various volunteering experiences and growing appreciation for medicine’s ability to impact lives of individuals and families. Healthcare has such a unique capacity to encompass moments of the greatest joy and deepest sorrows.
At Duke, I’m involved in several activities that align with my values and interests. I am involved in the Backpack Project of Durham where we donate essential supplies to the local communities at Durham and tutor kids at the homeless shelter. I also serve as the External Events Chair for KAjok, where I aim to spread the joys of my culture in through engaging events on campus.
I have also been involved in the Perfect lab, where I conduct research on a specific yeast, called Cryptococcus neoformans which affects the nervous and central system. My main objective is to identify proteins that interact with the TPS1 enzyme of the trehalose pathway in order to investigate the impact of trehalose on the Cryptococcus’ virulence. I also recently joined The Chronicle as a photographer.
In my free time, I enjoy any crafty activities such as crocheting, and also love listening to music, and spending time with friends. I am so excited to be involved in Cardea and the supportive community it provides!
“As a Cardea Fellow, I'm have the privilege of being surrounded by an incredible cohort who have similar passions and challenges on the path to becoming a healthcare professional. It is truly inspiring to be on this journey with those who are driven but also so kind and supportive of each other’s aspirations. As a first-generation college in the U.S., navigating the pre-health track can feel overwhelming at times, but Cardea has been my safety net— a support system I can always rely on. ”
