Hello everyone, my name is Ruth Amare. I am a first year at Duke and a Cardea Fellow Candidate. It would be an understatement to say, I’m thrilled to begin my journey into medicine! I was born and raised in Ethiopia for 5 years before I moved to the United States in 2010. I am fluent in Amharic and Spanish. My hobbies include running, biking, reading, exploring new restaurants and photography. I am a huge admirer of Jay Shetty! Among his works my favorites are Think Like a Monk, 8 Rules of Love and his podcast series On Purpose. I am a believer in a life of purpose and it's true that the greatest act of love is to serve those you encounter. The glow I see in people when they receive acts of kindness is truly unparalleled and I see myself as the kind of person who makes a profound impact on the lives of others. There is no greater gift than that of health and in providing healthcare to those in their time of need there is an opportunity to connect with the most intimate parts of humanity. In this, I see a calling for myself.
At Duke I would like to build on this, through acquiring opportunities to experience a variety of medical settings through shadowing, volunteering at the hospital and being involved in biomedical research. My future goals include, being an EMT or Medical Assistant, contributing meaningfully to research in biomedicine, being mentored through my journey to medical school and eventually giving and mentoring someone else. After my time as a Duke Undergrad is over, I would love nothing more than to come back as a medical student. Although I can't say where I will end up in the unpredictable application process, I see medical school in future works for myself.
“Cardea is essentially the best environment to be in for a pre-medical student looking for mentorship and community. Not only do you receive access to resources and mentorship, you are also surrounded by a cohort of likeminded and motivated individuals who will inspire you to keep going.”
