Fayetteville, North Carolina

My name is Keith Sowell, and I am a Duke University senior from Fayetteville, North Carolina. I am an African-American Studies Major with a Chemistry minor. My goals are to become and anesthesiologist or work in the emergency room and impact underprivileged communities, while continuing my poetry to reach many. I’ve desired a career in the medical field since I was a child, and was motivated by the experiences of those around me and my own in not being to utilize the privileges of healthcare.

My main hobbies are writing and performing poetry and spoken word on, singing in gospel choirs and playing tennis. Outside of the classroom I am the Co-President of Spoken Verb, which is the on campus poetry and spoken word collective, and active member of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students and United in Praise gospel choir. I also spent my sophomore year being a Resident Assistant over a freshman hall, which was a challenging, yet social and leadership stimulating experience that I dedicated my time towards. I have also recently lived out a longtime dream in being casted as a castaway on CBS Survivor Season 38: Edge of Extinction, which aired this past spring. It was an intense and eye-opening experience that has instilled many live lessons and principles in me, and allowed me to see how unlimited I truly am.
