I am thrilled to introduce myself as an incoming Cardea Fellow at Duke University, where I will be joining the esteemed Class of 2027. Hailing from the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, I am a proud product of a Cuban household, which has instilled in me a strong sense of culture and heritage. My academic journey is driven by a deep passion for understanding the human brain and its complexities. Therefore, I have chosen to pursue a major in neuroscience at Duke, with a minor in global health. Exploring the intricate workings of the brain, combined with a global health perspective, will allow me to contribute meaningfully to the field of medicine and address healthcare disparities. Orthopedics has captured my interest due to its intersection between neuroscience and musculoskeletal health. By focusing on orthopedics, I hope to enhance patients' lives by improving mobility, reducing pain, and restoring functionality. My previous research experience at the University of Miami has fueled my curiosity and determination. I have had the opportunity to engage in computational and theoretical research, specifically studying Alzheimer's disease. Through this work, I gained insights into the potential of computational techniques to unravel the complexities of neurodegenerative disorders. I am excited to bring this research background to Duke University and continue exploring the vast potential of computational methods in medicine.
At Duke, I plan to immerse myself in the diverse research opportunities available. I intend to join both the computational and biomedical engineering labs to investigate the utilization of artificial intelligence in medicine. I aim to contribute to the development of innovative medical solutions that can improve patient care and outcomes. Beyond academics, I am eager to engage with the blue devil community, involving myself in student organizations like the First Generation and Latin American student clubs. As I embark on this exciting chapter of my academic journey, I am committed to pushing boundaries, making a positive impact, and embracing the rich tapestry of opportunities that await me. I look forward to meeting new faces, forging lasting friendships, and leaving a legacy during my time at Duke.
