Academic Interests: Evolutionary Anthropology major, Chemistry and Spanish minors

As a junior at Duke, I am studying Evolutionary Anthropology as a major and working toward Chemistry and Spanish minors. My innate interests in the human body and helping people, combined with my own positive experiences with healthcare, have encouraged me to pursue a career in medicine which is why I am pursuing a Pre-Med track at Duke. Throughout middle school and high school, I was involved in the establishment of a STEAM camp for girls which combined my passions for science and mentorship. At Duke, I took this passion into my work with FEMMES Connect, a program that serves a similar purpose to encourage young girls to explore STEM as the programming coordinator on the program’s executive board. I also currently help with ecotoxicology research at the Nicholas School of the Environment as a way to explore science and the effects of human action on the natural world outside of my major. My first language being Spanish, I am deeply interested in its history and in expanding my own knowledge of the language which is why I am also pursuing a Spanish minor. This previous year at Duke, I was fortunate enough to volunteer with a local organization to become more involved in Durham's Spanish speaking immigrant community. I am incredibly excited to continue to explore issues of education, health, and culture within the Latino community in Durham and beyond during my years at Duke. These experiences continue to further encourage my passion for medicine and my interest in access to healthcare in communities as I hope to pursue a specialty in OB-GYN and reproductive health to serve underserved communities.

“The endless resources Cardea has provided have helped me acclimate to life at Duke inside and outside of the classroom. Because of Cardea, I have gained confidence in classes and have found a wonderful, supportive friend in each member of the Cardea community. ”
