My name is Emily Prudot Gonzalez, and I'm a sophomore at Duke majoring in Biology. My passion for biology really skyrocketed when I first learned about water properties like adhesion, cohesion, and its specific heat capacity. Just the fact that water could defy gravity with adhesion to move up a plant's stem; thereby, hydrating the plant. Biology interests me because it continues to show me how life is almost always perfectly pieced together for survival after eons of transformations. I'm currently striving to pursue a profession in the Medical Lab Science (MLS) field. This summer I became an insider to the lab world when I conducted research on Cryptococcus neoformans, a pathogenic fungi. I learned several lab techniques and processes in drug targeting. It definitely allowed me to confirm that MLS is the field I want to pursue. I am currently still working in the lab and am excited to get to know more about the field.

“I'm pretty sure anyone can agree that the biggest thing about being a Cardea Fellow is being apart of the wonderful community. We are all in the same dorm and the same class, so it helps to just be able to recognize someone in a class and easily ask for help. I mean I literally go downstairs to knock on Acelo's door for help whenever I need it. Everyone is pretty friendly, and it's a nice welcome when you're just coming into Duke or starting Chem 99D. ”
