As a young child, I was always in and out of the hospital because of my relatives suffering from noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and heart disease. Seeing their pain and suffering made me realize that I wanted to not only support them, but support individuals and families going through the same suffering. Hence, I decided that I wanted to become a physician that advocates for patients and provides a platform for them to share their voices. I also realized that I desire to apply a policy/social justice lens when potentially treating patients. Understanding their backgrounds and social determinants will allow me to properly and holistically treat patients, and develop long-term relationships with them and their families. I also intend to, perhaps, run for office one day to help effectuate change on a political and systemic level.
