Academic interests: Neuroscience major, minors in Biology and Chemistry

I was raised in Cairo, Egypt until the age of 11, where I then moved to Florida to attend a boarding school called Montverde Academy for 6 years. My favorite things to do outside of school is play Ice Hockey or go ice skating or roller blading. I have done extensive research throughout my high school years and have done some research in college. In high school I spent my summers at universities doing research on entomology at the University of Central Florida as well as being published in the Daily Entomologist. In high school I did the majority of my research through the clubs and organizations I was apart of, a notable organization being the SAC STEM Program in which I replicated the Clarke Doll Study with students in elementary school ages ranging from 4 years old to 9 years olds. I have participated in the PSearch orientation program at Duke University over the course of two weeks where we conducted an experiment on DNA Sequencing using soil found around campus as well as an individual research project on the CRISPR Gene.

On campus I serve on the leadership board of BSA, coordinating and organizing multiple events each semester to help strengthen a community of over 600 minority students on campus, encouraging more collaborative and constructive relationships between the undergraduate classes. I am also a FAC, first-year advisory counselor, tasked with provision of first-year community building events, advocating for student development, resolution of student concerns, and improving the student residential life experience. This past summer I attended the University of Oxford studying science, ethics, and society where I discussed the morality of medical enhancements that are soon to become a possibility. This fall I will also start working with Know Your Status, a group that provides free confidential HIV tests to Duke Students in order to promote safe sex. My personal hobbies include being a member of Duke’s figure skating team, and swimming.

“Being friends with many of the Cardea Fellows first semester allowed for a smooth assimilation into the program. Cardea has provided me with a community in which I can grow from others whether it be academics or life experiences. With Cardea I feel more prepared as a pre-med student and feel as though I have a community of peers in whom I can trust to help during my difficult endeavors throughout my next three years at Duke and beyond. ”
